Campground Commander Alternative: A Plain Comparison for Small Parks

By Scott Wilder10 min read

Short answer

Campground Commander publishes a one-time $775 membership fee and offers card processing through Basys, while CampStack is a flat $49 a month or $490 a year with unlimited reservations and users and no booking fees. If you want a campground commander alternative, the real differences are how you pay for the software, how card fees are handled, and whether you want a contract-free subscription or a one-time purchase.

Campground Commander is a real product with a clear price. This article lays out what it says on its own page, what CampStack says about itself, and where each one fits. Nothing here is a knock on Commander. Some parks will be better served by a one-time fee. Others will want something different. You should see both sides before you decide.

What Campground Commander publishes

We read Campground Commander's home page on 2026-10-29 and wrote down only what it states. Here is the short version.

Price. The page shows a purchase form headed "Membership Cost: only $775 (one-time fee)" (Campground Commander home page, checked 2026-10-29). A monthly fee for the software itself is not published on the pages we checked.

Cloud, not installed. The page describes the software as "Cloud Based," reachable "anytime, anyplace you have internet access," on any device (source, checked 2026-10-29). You do not install it on an office computer.

Users. The page says "Campground Commander allows for any number of users" (source, checked 2026-10-29). So seats are not a cost driver.

Online booking. The page says the software does not allow double booking of campsites, and that it supports interactions "online, in person or on the move" (source, checked 2026-10-29).

Reports. The page lists arrival and departure, reservations, occupancy and settlement reports, and says you can download reports in CSV to load into QuickBooks (source, checked 2026-10-29).

Ownership. The page says Campground Commander "has joined forces with Let's Camp," and the footer reads "Powered by Let's Camp" (source, checked 2026-10-29).

Contract. The page references a Software Purchase Agreement and Terms of Service, but the contract length and cancellation terms are not published on the pages we checked.

One limit on our research. Commander's separate pricing, FAQ and features pages now forward to a Let's Camp site, and that site would not load for our automated check on 2026-10-29. We did not try to get around it. So everything above comes from the home page. If you are seriously weighing Commander, call them and ask for the current terms in writing.

How Campground Commander handles card processing

This is where owners should read the fine print, so here is exactly what the page says.

Commander names Basys as its card processing partner. The page says Basys offers "a choice of 2 deliveries for charging for their rates" (source, checked 2026-10-29):

  1. "Monthly Fees + a percentage of all transactions that go through their system." The monthly amount and the percentage are not published on the pages we checked.
  2. Surcharging, which the page calls the least expensive option. It describes a flat rate of 3.89% with "no Monthly Fees or per item fees." The fee "will be passed onto your camper customers as a 'Surcharge Fee' during the payment process."

So under option 2, the camper pays the 3.89% and the campground pays Basys nothing. Under option 1, the campground pays monthly fees plus a percentage.

The page adds several limits. It says surcharging debit cards is illegal, that anything swiped or chip-read on a terminal cannot be surcharged, and that "several states have laws that prohibit or limit surcharging," naming Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and Oklahoma. The Colorado note on that page is tied to a date in 2022, so treat the list as a starting point and confirm the rules for your state. This is general information, not legal advice.

The page also says the software "includes the option to use an external card processor," so Basys is not the only route. How that works in practice is not detailed on the pages we checked.

How CampStack prices it

CampStack is flat-fee reservation software for small independent campgrounds and RV parks. The terms:

  • $49 a month, or $490 a year.
  • Unlimited reservations and unlimited users.
  • No booking fees, no setup fee and no contract.
  • A 14-day trial.
  • Launch offer: the software is free until your park's first 25 online bookings. After that, your rate is locked for life.

Card processing goes through Stripe at its standard rate, passed through at cost. Stripe's public page lists 2.9% + 30 cents per successful domestic card transaction, with no setup or monthly fees from Stripe (Stripe pricing, checked 2026-10-25). CampStack never adds a percentage on top, and no CampStack fee ever appears on guest checkout.

You can see the full numbers on the owners page and the pricing page.

What the money looks like over time

Here is an illustration, not real park data. We assume you pay for CampStack yearly at $490 and ignore the launch offer.

Commander softwareCampStack software
Year 1$775$490
Year 2 total$775$980
Year 3 total$775$1,470

On software alone, a one-time fee costs less once you pass roughly the second year. That is simply how a one-time price works. If you plan to run the same system for ten years and do not need anything else, Commander's published model is the cheaper one on the software line.

The software line is not the whole bill, though. Card processing is where most parks spend more every season. Here is a second illustration, with these assumptions: a $60 booking, paid online by a domestic credit card.

  • At the 3.89% surcharge Commander's page describes, the fee is about $2.33. On that page the camper pays it.
  • At Stripe's published 2.9% + 30 cents, the cost is about $2.04.

Those are different arrangements. In one the guest sees an added line at checkout. In the other, CampStack adds no fee of its own, and the processing cost is Stripe's published rate. Your own mix of cards, debit and in-person payments will change the real numbers. Use the booking fee calculator with your own booking count and average stay to see what you would pay under each model.

Who should stay with Commander

Be honest with yourself about what you need. Commander may fit if:

  • You like paying once and not thinking about a subscription again.
  • Your guests are used to a surcharge line at checkout and your state allows it.
  • You already use it and it works. Switching has a cost in time, and you do not need to switch just because a blog post exists.

Who might want a different option

CampStack may fit if:

  • You want one predictable bill with no percentage added by the software company.
  • You do not want a surcharge line on guest checkout.
  • You want to start free and see real bookings first. The launch offer covers your first 25 online bookings.
  • You want out of a contract question altogether. CampStack has no contract and no setup fee.

An embeddable booking widget is available, so guests can book from your own website. Booking.com, Airbnb and Vrbo sync is not available today.

How switching works

CampStack imports sites, guests and future reservations from CSV files. You do not retype your park.

  1. Ask Commander what export they can give you. The home page mentions CSV downloads for reports, but whether guests and future reservations can be exported is not published on the pages we checked, so ask directly.
  2. Put the data into three simple files: sites, guests and reservations. A spreadsheet is fine.
  3. Upload them to CampStack. You will see a preview before anything is saved.
  4. Run both systems side by side for a short time, with your busiest weekend in mind.

The switch page has more detail. Pick a slow week, not a holiday weekend, for the move.
